Armenia composer: Armenia needs good performers of Komitas works

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia lacks in a quality school to teach performance of Komitas compositions, a composer specializing in Komitas works, Arthur Shahnazaryan told a news conference.

“In Armenia, Komitas compositions are performed either by opera artists, with their style of sinning reminding Italian opera, or folk singers who try to perform them like ashugs did. This is the reason many dislike Komitas works,” he noted.

As the composer stressed, Armenia needs a school, where quality specialists would teach a correct manner of performing Komitas works.

Soghomon Gevorki Soghomonyan –Komitas, born on September 26 or October 8, 1869 in Kutahya, Ottoman Empire, died on October 22, 1935 in Paris, France, was an Armenian priest, composer, choir leader, singer, music ethnologist, music pedagogue and musicologist. Many regard him as the founder of modern Armenian classical music.
