Armenian MP suggests parliamentary discussion of Eurovision selection criteria

PanARMENIAN.Net - A member of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) suggests a parliamentary discussion of Eurovision Armenian contestant’s selection criteria to avoid failures in future.

As Gagik Melikyan told a news conference in Yerevan, the selection principles set by the Public Television of Armenia (Armenia 1TV) should be discussed at the parliament.

The parliamentarian said he took Armenia’s failure at the contest close to heart.

The selection of Eurovision contestants has been widely discussed in recent years, with Armenia 1TV often accused of partiality.

Thus, according to earlier reports, some fans of Eurovision 2011 in Armenia disagreed with the selection of song Boom-Boom performed by Armenian singer Emmy at the song contest. As they noted, the selection was illogical. According to the results of SMS voting posted on the web, the song AYO was the one to be given priority.

Last year, Emmy, and her mother, Nadezhda Sargsyan, went public accusing 2010 contestant Eva Rivas of foul play.

Emmy was knocked out of Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in the May 10 seminal.

Ildar Gasimov and Nigar Jamal (Ell/Nikki) of Azerbaijan were voted winners, after scoring 221 points with their love song, Running Scared.

After Emmy’s failure, Armenian media reported that Armenian contestant, along with 4 others filed a complaint to EBU over technical issued during the contest broadcast. However, the head of the Armenian delegation to Eurovision, Gohar Gasparyan, refuted the reports.
