Persons sentenced to life imprisonment may, at the earliest, be conditionally released after serving a period of twenty-five years.

The decision was taken following the extradition of Armenian officer’s assassin Ramil Safarov to Azerbaijan.

Presidential spokesman Imed Daimi said that the move was made despite an improvement in the country's security situation.

“The problem is not in Azerbaijan, where one who kills as Armenian is treated like a hero,” Naira Zohrabyan said.

Judge Elizabeth Gloster scathingly dismissed Berezovsky's case, calling him “an unimpressive, and inherently unreliable witness.”
