LTE network to be launched in Armenia December 1

Review of November 8-15 information technology and telecommunication events.

VivaCell-MTS has secured the necessary radio spectrum frequencies needed to begin the construction of a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in Yerevan and Armenia’s regions. The decision to grant VivaCell-MTS a license for LTE network services was passed during the November 10 meeting of the Public Services Regulatory Commission of Armenia. The LTE license stipulates that VivaCell-MTS would have to launch commercial operations by March 1, 2011. The license will be valid until November 4, 2019 and will cost AMD990 million. For the first time in CIS, LTE network was put into operation in Tashkent in the end of July 2010. A test launch of LTE mobile network technology in Armenia was scheduled for December 1, 2010.

PanARMENIAN.Net - ArmenTel has announced the oncoming distribution of 096 numerical capacity spectrum telephone numbers. On November 10, Public Services Regulatory Commission assigned the 096 telephone code to ArmenTel CJSC (Beeline trademark). The necessity for a new numerical capacity was caused by company’s exhausting over 60% of numerical lines in 091 and 099 capacity.

Honorable Marie L. Yovanovitch, Ambassador of the United States of America, revealed a special plaque at the Synopsys Armenia R&D Center in Yerevan. The plague is signed by Under Secretary of Economic, Energy and Agricultural Affairs Robert Hormats. The special citation was offered to Synopsys “in recognition of corporate citizenship, innovation and exemplary business practices in Armenia”. As Synopsys Armenia executive director Hovik Musayelyan stressed in his statement, the company was recognized for three major factors: promotion of U.S. and foreign investors by showcasing Armenia as a potential informational technology (IT) hub; collaboration with universities on IT training programs; and reduction of pollution levels by planting hundreds of trees to counter recent deforestation.

Instigate company has developed a new Arax operating system, which is based on the famous GNU/ Linux OS. “Arax will be available for free use and distribution, however, it would be more convenient for companies to pay for maintenance, which is much cheaper than similar foreign solutions,” Arax co-author Norayr Chilingaryan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter. The OS is localized to Armenian, Persian, Georgian, English, German and French. It identifies other file systems and offers various interfaces as well as translation and spell check of Armenian texts.

Anelik international money transfer system and QIWI payment service made transfers through QIWI, the largest payment terminal with further claim at Anelik outlets, available. Anelik clients were given a chance to effect money transfers to Russia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Moldova, Abkhazia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Czech Republic from over 100 thousand QIWI outlets. The sum can be claimed within 15 minutes of its transfer.

An official launch ceremony of the new Alternative Resources in Media (ARM) program took place in Yerevan to further the efforts targeted at media development in Armenia, particularly at promoting the information and views missing in mainstream Armenian media. The Alternative Resources in Media (ARM) program aims at enhancing and improving access to pluralistic and unbiased information in Armenia via traditional and alternative media through the use of new information technologies. The program is jointly implemented by Internews Network (USA), Eurasia Partnership Foundation, Yerevan Press Club and Internews Media Support NGO. The program is made possible by the support of the American People through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). ARM is planned to have three main components: production and distribution of alternative content, promotion of media literacy and legal advocacy and monitoring. Combining local expertise and extensive international practice, ARM will pursue an integrated approach to build civic demand for alternative content, promote new patterns of information production and dissemination and enhance public advocacy on media freedom.
