Over 40 mln calls made in Armenia on New Year’s eve

Review of January 10-16 information technology and telecommunication events.

Communication sector proceeds grossed 152,4 bln in January–November 2010 in Armenia, exceeding 2009’s index by 0,3%. According to the National Statistical Service of Armenia, proceeds from IT and communication (ITC) services totaled AMD 174 billion, growing by 1,1% compared with 2009 results. ITC share comprises 24,6% of the total volume of services rendered in Armenia.

PanARMENIAN.Net - In 2011, Armenia’s Public Services Regulatory Committee (PSRC) will adopt legislative bills, regulating local and foreign investments in telecommunications sphere, also promoting the operators’ joint use of the fixed telecommunication network infrastructure to be constructed in the framework of WB crediting program, according to PSRC 2011 Program. Steps will be taken to develop competition at IP services market through creating favorable legislative environment for providers of internet services, which will positively influence the quality of services and retail tariffs. Expansion of access to broadband internet in Armenia will be in the focus of PSRC 2011 Program.

VivaCell-MTS has announced that the network handled 4 739 081 SMS messages on December 31, the New Years Eve before midnight, with a further 3 654 031 on January 1, 2011. 18,181,127 calls were handled through VivaCell-MTS network on December 31, 2010 before midnight, and another 19 123 344 on January 1, 2011. In total, 8 393 112 short messages and 37 304 471 calls were handled by VivaCell-MTS network on December 31, 2010 and January 1, 2011. Compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of calls increased by 15%.

Meanwhile, Beeline subscribers sent over 860 thousand SMS messages and made over 4,6 million calls with a medium duration of 1 min. 8 sec; 4,9 million fixed-line connection calls were made a medium duration of 2 min. 2 sec.

ArmenTel has launched 3G network operations in Armenian cities of Ararat, Armavir, Artashat, Ashtarak, Vardenis, Vedi, Gavar, Yeghvard, Masis, Metsamor, Hrazdan, Sevan as well as in dozens of Armenian village communities. Parallel to expansion of coverage zone, multiple new 3G stations were put into operation in the cities of Abovyan, Vanadzor, Gyumri, Echmiadzin and Yerevan, thus enlarging the capacity of current network. ArmenTel’s 3G network covers a territory with a population of 2,5 million throughout Armenia.

The Educational Foundation of Artsakh Vladimir Grigoryan is looking for partners to provide schools of Karabakh with Internet. The foundation can use two sets of satellite equipment for this purpose, what will allow providing at least 30 villages of Artsakh with Internet communication with a connection speed of 256KB/s and unlimited traffic. The project, which includes 30 villages, is estimated to cost $50,000.

Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan summarized the results of the first year of his blogging. “A range of problems have been solve through your assistance. For example, compulsory usage of Unicode encoding in the official document circulations was introduced. Besides, we made the procedure for off-budget accounts usage in state bodies more transparent,” Tigran Sargsyan told bloggers in his journal. The Prime Minister promised to continue blogging (tigransargsyan.livejournal.com), “as there are still many matters that need to be discussed.”

Nagorno Karabakh Prime Minister also launched a blog at govnkr.livejournal.com. As Ara Harutyuntan noted in his first post, “in our daily work we always try to discuss and give fundamental solutions to the problems of our citizens, nevertheless I would like to make relations and software connection with the NKR citizens and our compatriots living in different countries more businesslike and immediate.”

200 viewers visited the newly-opened 5D Cinema film hall in Yerevan during 3 days of its operation. The film hall with 4-person capacity allows for viewing of eight 5D videos of different genres (3-5 minute duration each). Ticket price is AMD 2000. In future, 5D Cinema plans opening of new film halls in Yerevan. 5D videos provide one-to-one reality to viewers, with enhanced special effects allowing to sense smells, temperature, moisture and movements throughout the course of the film. The film hall is equipped with Virtual Reality Technologies Belarusian company 5D cinema systems.
