Brazilian filmmaker Carlos Diegues named Cannes Camera d’or chair

PanARMENIAN.Net - Brazilian filmmaker Carlos Diegues gets the task of picking this year’s best new director from the lineup of emerging talent at the Cannes Film Festival, The Wrap reported.

Diegues will head up the Camera d’or jury, which kicks off on May 16, Cannes officials announced.

Other jury members will include Italian journalist Gloria Satta and French film industry representatives Herve Icovic, Michel Andrieu and Francis Gavelle.

This year’s crop of Camera d’or contenders includes 22 films presented in the Official Selection, Directors’ Fortnight or La Semaine de la Critique categories, according to Cannes officials.

Over the course of his five-decade career (and counting), Diegues has directed over 20 features, documentaries and shorts, including “God Is Brazilian” (2003), “Orfeu” (1999) and “Bye Bye Brasil” (1980) - many of which he also had a hand in writing.

Diegues will announce the winner at the festival’s closing ceremony on May 27.
