RPA nominates Hovik Abrahamyan for parliament speaker’s post

PanARMENIAN.Net - The ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) nominated head of RPA election headquarters Hovik Abrahamyan for the post of National assembly speaker.

Other parliamentary groups nominated no candidates.

It is noteworthy that Armenian National Congress (ANC) and Heritage opposition party refused to participate in today’s meeting.

In his speech Mr. Abrahamyan thanked President Serzh Sargsyan and RPA members for trusting him, noting that the new parliament will be a representative body.

He said he familiarized himself with the election programs of other political parties and gave positive assessment to them.

Mr. Abrahamyan stressed the need to create atmosphere of mutual trust, tolerance and partnership for parliament’s effective operation.

He voiced readiness to accept criticism of the government, whilst “acting as government defender” when necessary.

He noted interests of the country and the nation as priorities for him, pledging also to attach great importance to inter-parliamentary diplomacy.

RPA vice president Galust Sahakyan, in turn, stressed Hovik Abrahamyan’s vast experience behind party’s decision to nominate him for the post.

Asked by a Prosperous Armenia parliamentary group member Gurgen Arsenyan about his plans to counter the practice of MPs’ voting for others, Mr. Abrahamyan expressed willingness to pay heed to suggestions addressing the issue.
