Nokia closing office in Tehran July 14, 2012 - 18:14 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Nokia, one of the most popular cell phone brands in Iran, decided to close its office in Tehran because of the recent sanctions by European Union against Iran over its controversial nuclear program, Kabir News reported. Nokia spokesman, Mark Durrant, also confirmed this news by saying: “We have to close our office in Tehran by the end of August due to the recent sanctions. However our customers in Iran can buy new cell phones and accessories from unofficial agents.” Hamidreza Nikdel, one of the officials of Nokia in Iran, also confirmed this announcement. After presidential election in Iran on 2009, a group of Iranians decided to boycott Nokia’s products. Isa Saharkhiz, Iranian journalist, revealed that Nokia helped Iranian government spy on Internet users in order to suppress street riots. Another group of Iranians held demonstrations in front of Nokia office in the United States to show their hatred. At that time, Nokia’s share market in Iran dropped significantly and Nokia’s spokesperson didn’t made any comments on that subject.
