Defense Ministry deems changes in Armenia’s military draft system possible![]() August 17, 2012 - 14:01 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian Defense Ministry spokesman believes introduction of core changes in Armenia’s military draft system possible. “The current conscription system is based on Soviet mechanisms, which sometimes fail to meet expectations,” Artsrun Hovhannisyan told a press conference in Yerevan. He noted that many high-ranking military officials may be relieved of their posts as a result of ongoing inspections, citing General Sergei Chalyan’s resignation. According to the ministry spokesman, military draft mechanisms become tougher year by year. Mr. Hovhannisyan further refuted linkage between General Chalyan’s resignation to his personal relations with RA Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan, conditioning the fact with the violations recorded in the course of conscription. Vahan Hovhannisyan voiced hope that the ruling authorities acknowledge the difficulties Armenia currently faces. Prior to the vote, RPA parliamentary group leader Galust Sahakyan announced the party’s decision to vote against the bill.
