Microsoft to open London-based tablet gaming studio

PanARMENIAN.Net - Microsoft has announced plans to open a dedicated tablet gaming studio in London, Digital Spy said citing MCV.

The new studio will focus on developing games for Windows 8 tablets and will be headed by former Rare production director Lee Schuneman.

Opening in November, the studio is currently hiring staff, including a creative director, incubation director, studio release manager and product manager.

Schuneman said that he was excited to be part of the project, before praising the potential of Microsoft's new entertainment platform.

"Adding a fourth UK-based studio to the incredible roster of talent already in place not only increases our in-region studio presence, but will allow Microsoft Studios to explore the many creative and business opportunities that developing new games and entertainment experiences on Windows 8 tablet devices and platforms will afford," he stated.

Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system for desktops, laptops and tablets will go on sale on October 26, alongside its Surface tablet.

There will be two Surface models available, one running Windows 8 Pro and fitted with an Intel x86 processor, while the other will run Windows RT and come with an ARM-based chipset.

Both Surface tablets will also feature Xbox integration and have Microsoft's new SmartGlass feature, creating greater integration of content across multiple screens.

The tablets' casings double as keyboards and trackpads, while an integrated kickstand props the device at a viewing angle for watching video.
