This is the first general strike since the country's coalition government was formed in June, as the prime minister and finance minister hammered out a package of €11.5 billion ($14.87 billion) in spending cuts. The Greek strike comes a day after clashes with police during anti-austerity demonstrations in Spain left 64 people injured. An Islamist insurgency, once confined largely to the republic of Chechnya, has spread across the North Caucasus in recent years. Earlier, at least five Azerbaijan soldiers were killed and six seriously injured when their vehicle rammed into a tree and overturned.
