The film follows a pair of British teen girls whose friendship is tested during the peak of Cold War fears. The two titular characters, Ginger (ElleFanning) and Rosa (Alice Englert) - the two best friends' friendship is challenged by personal trauma and divergent interests. Ginger enjoys poetry and social activism, while Rosa is more socially mature, inclined to smoke and fool around with boys. When Ginger’s parents’ marriage beings to disintegrate, she begins to spend more time with a gay couple (Oliver Platt and Timothy Spall) and their America friend (Annette Bening). The troubled marriage and heightened fear of a nuclear threat takes its toll. Elle Fanning’s performance as one of the two girls drew rave reviews at both Telluride and Toronto film fests.
