The Beatles top UK’s biggest selling group chart, Queen come 2nd

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Beatles is the biggest selling groups of all time in the UK occupying the top spot after racking up a whopping 22.1 million in combined sales, The Hollywood Reporter said citing the Official Charts Company.

This makes the quartet of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr not only the biggest selling group in the history of the Official Singles Chart, but with a 400,000 lead over Elvis, it also the biggest selling act of all time too.

To date, The Beatles have had 31 Top 40 hits (including 17 official number one singles).

The UK’s second biggest selling singles group of all time is Queen. The quartet have a combined sales total of 12.8 million singles, and their biggest selling track is "Bohemian Rhapsody", whose chart success began with occupying the top spot for nine weeks and selling over a million copies on release in 1975.

Following the death of lead singer Freddie Mercury in November 1991, "Rhapsody" returned to the top of the Official Singles Chart for five weeks, selling nearly a million copies again, making it the only single to become an official Christmas number one on two separate occasions and claim the top spot in four different calendar years (1975, 1976, 1991 and 1992).

Swedish supergroup ABBA is third with a combined sales total of 11.3 million copies.

The Top 5 is rounded out by The Rolling Stones with a combined sales total of 10.1 million singles and Oasis with a 9.079 million combined single sales tally.

For the best selling males, Elvis Presley led the field with his 21.7 million combined sales tally. Perhaps surprisingly, British crooner Cliff Richard is second behind the King with 21.5 million, while Michael Jackson noses into third with 15.5 million, just ahead of Elton John's 15 million and fourth place. David Bowie rounds out the top five with 10.7 million.

Madonna is the UK's biggest selling female singles artist of all time, posting a combined sales total of 17.8 million.

In third is Kylie Minogue, with 10.2 million single sales, ahead of Whitney Houston's 8.5 million tally and Lady Gaga's 7.33 million.
