OSCE Minsk Group proposals tempting to Baku?

PanARMENIAN.Net - A performance aiming to show up Baku’s aspiration for speedy settlement of Nagorno Karabakh conflict is being staged in Azerbaijan following the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs’ visit to the region.

Prior to the visit, Azeri media outlets reported about the Co-Chairs’ intention to come up with new proposals on the problem solution. However, Azerbaijani foreign ministry further denied the information, dubbing the new ideas a mere fancy of journalists. Nevertheless, no sensational statements were made during the visit, with the Minsk Group Co-Chairs issuing proposals on the need to alleviate tensions at the line of contact. They further came up with another statement, stressing the parties’ readiness to continue efforts on the level of foreign ministers. Meanwhile, according to Armenian media outlets, the mediators offered to organize a meeting between Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents. However, Serzh Sargsyan deemed the proposal as groundless, with the meeting postponed by six months.

All of a sudden Baku, which has repeatedly showed disregard for OSCE Minsk Group calls urging for ceasefire observation and removal of snipers, stared dancing to a different tune.

Head of the Foreign Relations Department of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Novruz Mammadov issued a statement, urging OSCE Minsk Group to speed up Karabakh resolution, referring to “Madrid Principles and several other documents adopted.”

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, in turn, noted, “If the Armenian side says that it accepts the co-chairs' proposals, then it's time to sign the peace agreement. If it is so, Azerbaijan is ready to work on the text of the agreement.”

It’s not ruled out that the superpowers have started expressing dislike for the position of oil-rich Azerbaijan, considering the latest developments. Besides showing disregard for the OSCE Minsk Group calls, Azerbaijan continues storage of arms and open violation of the international principles by pardoning and glorifying ax-killer Ramil Safarov.

Perhaps, the fears over the depletion of oil reserves and the regional conflicts have forced Baku to seriously address Karabakh issue in the hope of getting rid of one problem at least, whilst continuing to pin the blame on Armenia.

In conclusion, it’s not ruled out that the proposals OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs issued during the latest visit seemed quite alluring to Azerbaijan.
