Google Maps for IOS app hits 10mln downloads in two days

PanARMENIAN.Net - Google Maps for IOS app reached 10 million downloads in just two days, The Inquirer reports.

Jeff Huber, SVP of Commerce and Local at Google announced the news on Google+. He said, "More than 10 million downloads in less than 48 hours after release!"

He added, "We're excited for the positive reception of Google Maps for iPhone around the world. Congratulations to the Maps Team on the recognition for the passion and hard work they poured into it, for this release and over the last 7+ years."

Apple customers have fled to Google's reworked app since it made its debut in the iTunes Store last week, which isn't surprising given the state of Apple's own Maps app. Thanks to the Apple Maps app's lack of accuracy, shoddy satellite images and potentially life-threatening direction giving skills, Apple was forced to apologize for replacing Google Maps in IOS 6.

Apple CEO Tim Cook issued the apology shortly after Apple Maps was released, admitting, ""With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better."

Google Maps, which is sitting proudly at the top of Apple's App Store downloads chart, is available to download for free. An iPad optimized version of the app is expected to arrive in 2013, The Inquirer says.
