One of the first in the witness box was the victim's fiance, who was attacked along with her on the bus. The five suspects have been indicted on 13 charges including gang rape, murder and abduction. If convicted, they could face the death penalty. A sixth suspect will be tried in a juvenile court and could face a maximum sentence of three years. The case is being held behind closed doors. The attack set off nationwide protests about India's treatment of women and spurred the government to hurry through a new package of laws to protect them. The international conference, backed by Russia and the U.S., aims to find a political solution to the conflict in Syria.
