Envoy hails steps taken to prevent violence against women

PanARMENIAN.Net - The fifty-seventh session of the Commission on the Status of Women is ongoing in New York, with Armenia's Permanent Representative to the UN Karen Nazarian delivering a speech on March 11.

Stressing the role of commission as an international platform for discussion of gender equality, Ambassador Nazarian voiced confidence that New York-hosted annual discussions offer solutions to women’s problems. Briefing those present on Armenia’s standpoint, the envoy underscored the importance of “The national program on improving the women’s status”, which clearly specifies the principles, priorities and targets in the field. He further hailed the steps taken to prevent violence against women following the Beijing conference, aiming to strengthen the political, legal and institutional fields.

Ambassador Nazarian noted Armenia’s close cooperation with international institutions aiming to foster and bring to fruition women, peace and security (WPS) agenda. The envoy also stressed the need to give renewed impetus to promotion of gender equality and women’s rights.
