Flipboard gains 6 million new users in on month, CEO says

PanARMENIAN.Net - Flipboard has gained 6 million new users in the last month, bringing its overall total to 56 million, according to its CEO, Digital Spy said.

The recent boost came since the popular news aggregation service launched its 2.0 update in late March, Mike McCue told listeners at the Disrupt conference in New York, hosted by TechCrunch.

Version 2.0 of Flipboard allows readers to create and personalise their own magazine made up of published web content.

McCue announced an intention to generate revenue from the popular iOS app by allowing brands to purchase full-page ads.

"If you're Burberry or Gucci, you're not going to run a banner ad," McCue said. "To get brand ad dollars to move to digital, you need to create a beautiful experience."

The Flipboard co-founder also spoke about the demise of iPad-only publication The Daily and its decision to charge for content that was already free online.

"What we've learned as an industry is that you have to get the packaging right. People will pay for content, but you need to make some of the content free."

Flipboard is likely to gain more readers when a 2.0 Android version launches, which McCue revealed would come "very, very soon".
