Tribeca Film nabs “The Broken Circle Breakdown” hit drama

PanARMENIAN.Net - Tribeca Film has acquired all U.S. rights to director Felix van Groeningen’s bluegrass-infused drama The Broken Circle Breakdown. A late-2013 theatrical release is planned for the film, written by Carl Joos and van Groeningen and produced by Dirk Impens, The Hollywood Reporter said.

A box office hit in Belgium, the film played the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival, where Joos and van Groeningen won best screenplay for a narrative feature film and lead actress Veerle Baetens won best actress in a narrative feature film. Earlier this year, it won the Panorama Audience Award at the 2013 Berlin International Film Festival.

Baetens and Johan Heldenbergh play a couple who fall in love at first sight. She has her own tattoo shop, and he plays the banjo in a bluegrass band. But when tragedy hits, their love is tested.

“Through flashbacks and flash-forwards, director van Groeningen seamlessly weaves a tapestry, detailing the story of a marriage and the pleasure and tragedy of being alive,” Geoffrey Gilmore, chief creative officer of Tribeca Enterprises, said.

The Broken Circle Breakdown also will be released through on-demand platforms. The deal was negotiated for Tribeca Film by Nick Savva, director of acquisitions, and Alison Diviney, acquisitions manager, and The Match Factory’s Brigitte Suarez on behalf of the filmmakers.
