Genocide bill initiator: petrodollars can’t buy memories or human rights

PanARMENIAN.Net - The initiator of a bill for criminalization of the Armenian Genocide denial, French MP Valérie Boyer attended a European Parliament –organized conference titled Genocide: Bridge to Reconciliation on Wednesday, May 29.

As Ms Boyer stressed during the event, Turkish and Azeri propaganda of the Armenian Genocide denial continues even now on the threshold of the Genocide 100th anniversary.

“Now more than ever, France must raise its voice in defense of values stipulated by the convention for the protection of human rights and basic freedoms. Petrodollars can’t buy memories or human rights,” Nouvelles d'Arménie quoted Ms Boyer as saying.

On January 23, 2012 the French Senate passed the bill criminalizing the Armenian Genocide. The bill envisaged imposing a 45,000 euro fine and a year in prison for anyone in France who denies this crime against humanity committed by the Ottoman Empire.

Later, the French Constitutional Council ruled that a bill adopted by the French Senate making it a crime to deny the Armenian Genocide was anti-constitutional.

In July, French President Francois Hollande confirmed plans for a new law criminalizing denial of the Armenian Genocide with representatives of the Armenian community.
