PanARMENIAN.Net - Gravity will open the 70th Venice Film Festival. The Alfonso Cuaron-directed science fiction film stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, and will play as part of the festival's out-of-competition lineup, Digital Spy said.

The pair feature as two astronauts who attempt to return to Earth after their shuttle is hit by debris.

Bullock plays medical engineer Dr Ryan Stone, who is embarking on her first mission alongside Clooney's veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky, who is on the cusp of retirement.

When their routine spacewalk goes wrong, they are left stranded alone in space tethered to each other with their oxygen quickly running out.

This is Cuaron's first film since Children of Men, which won the Golden Osella for best cinematography at Venice in 2006.

The 70th Venice Film Festival will take place from August 28 to September 7.

Gravity is released in the US on October 4, and in the UK on October 18.
