Google to close local recommendations app Alfred

PanARMENIAN.Net - Google is set to close its local recommendations app Alfred next week, Digital Spy said.

The free U.S.-only app provided users with recommendations on local places to visit such as restaurants and bars.

Google has given users till the end of today (July 12) to request their data if desired, before Alfred's planned closure on July 19.

An app notification revealed the news, saying: "We are shutting down Alfred on 07/19/2013. If you'd like to take your data (your liked places), please send us your request & email address by 07/12/2013 via the feedback tool inside the app."

Google had originally set out to keep Alfred open "for the foreseeable future" when it acquired the app from parent-company Clever Sense in December 2011.

The app's Google Play description also suggests Alfred "[hopes] to travel overseas soon" in the future.

Similar features are currently in-use on Maps and Google+, although it is not clear if the same technology is behind them.

The web giant has previously closed products after acquiring them, including Wavii and Meebo.
