Turkey noms “The Butterfly's Dream” for Foreign Language Oscar

PanARMENIAN.Net - Romantic blockbuster The Butterfly's Dream has been nominated as Turkey's Oscar submission in the foreign language film category, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Yilmaz Erdogan's romance is set against the backdrop of wartime Turkey when the country struggled to maintain its economy and introduced labor conscription.

In the last days of summer 1941, following the grueling Second World War comes the era of Obligation. Every man from Zonguldak and surrounding villages is required by law to work in the coalmines. Amidst all this poverty and turmoil, are two young poets: Muzaffer Tayyip Uslu and Rüştü Onur. Afflicted with tuberculosis, their only dream is to have their poetry published.

As the young men wait for the ferry one day, they see Suzan, the beautiful daughter of one of the city’s wealthy merchants. The poets make a bet over the girl: They will both write a poem for her and whichever Suzan likes, the other will fade from the scene…

A winner with Turkish audiences at home and in Europe, where the $15 million budget movie has notched up 2.5 million admissions since its February release, producer BKM Film are hoping it will be a hit with Academy Award selectors too.

Born in Hakkari in 1967, director and writer Yılmaz Erdoğan grew up in Ankara Aydınlıkevler.

Following his high school education, Erdoğan moved to Istanbul where he became well known for his role as Mükremin Çıtır in the television show he wrote, Bir Demet Tiyatro.

In 1994, he co-founded the Beşiktaş Cultural Center along with Necati Akpınar. Erdoğan’s first feature-length film, Vizontele, for which he is both screenwriter and director was made in 2001.

Becoming a boxoffice success, the film quickly received the title of ‘most viewed film’ in Turkey. Following his first film, Erdoğan continued his success with Vizontele:Tuuba, Organize İşler and Neşeli Hayat. He has also published three poetry and play books titled Kayıp Kentin Yakışıklısı, Anladım and Sahiler Düş Düşler Sahi.
