Palme d’Or winner Roland Joffe to head Monaco Film Fest jury

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Angel Film Awards will fly a little higher this year, with the ten-year-old festival that focuses on non-violent and inspirational films hosting its highest profile jury president yet, the Cesar and Oscar-nominated director Roland Joffe, The Hollywood Reporter said.

The Monaco International Film Festival, which hands out the Angels in several categories including best feature, documentary and short film will screen 17 films over its four days in early December. The British-French Joffe, who directed the BAFTA-winning story of the Khmer Rouge genocide in Cambodia in The Killing Fields in 1984 and won the Palme d’Or for his missionary drama The Mission two years later, will oversee the awards.

David Lynch’s Meditation-Creativity-Peace will anchor the opening night with its European premiere, which Lynch will present with 1960s singing legend Donovan, and the world premiere of Russian-Vietnamese director Costa Fam’s experimental short Shoes. The poignant 18-minute silent film focuses on a pair of red shoes and their journey through the Holocaust.

The closing ceremony will host the world premiere of For the Love of Children, a documentary from Canadian charity worker Ashid Bahl showcasing his foundation’s work to help children with medical maladies in his home province of Alberta, as well as efforts to build more than 60 sustainable schools and orphanages around the world from India to Afghanistan.

Though centered in glitzy Monaco, the Angel Film Awards bill themselves as a celebration of “peace, love and the art of making movies” by honoring films that explore and increase awareness of social issues, but stay away from gratuitous violence.

The festival runs Dec. 5-8.
