Berlin Fest to debut Michel Gondry’s animated Noam Chomsky doc

PanARMENIAN.Net - Michel Gondry’s Is The Man Who Is Tall Happy?, an animated conversation with left-wing thinker Noam Chomsky, will have its world premiere in the Panorama section of the Berlin International Film Festival, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Gondry’s latest was one of more than a dozen titles confirmed for the 2014 Panorama line-up.

They include Calvary, John Michael McDonagh’s highly-anticipated follow up to his hit debut The Guard. The feature, which will have its European premiere in Berlin, features The Guard star Brendan Gleeson as a good-natured priest forced to fight after he is threatened during a confession. Calvary co-stars Chris O'Dowd, Kelly Reilly and Aidan Gillen.

The Better Angels, the directorial debut of American filmmaker A. J. Edwards, which stars Jason Clarke, Diane Kruger, Brit Marling and Wes Bentley, will have its international premiere at the Panorama in Berlin. Another U.S. feature, Test from director Chris Mason Johnson (The New Twenty) will bow in Panorama as a European premiere.

Triptych, the drama from famed Quebec theater director Robert Lepage and co-director Pedro Pires, which had its premiere in Toronto, will use Berlin as its international launch pad.

The 2014 Panorama line-up includes multiple world premieres, among them for Saar Klein’s Things People Do starring Wes Bentley and Jason Isaacs; If You Don’t, I Will from French director Sophie Fillieres featuring Mathieu Amalric and Emmanuelle Devos; the Brazilian feature The Man of the Crowd from helmers Marcelo Gomes and Cao Guimaraes and Unfriend from Filipino filmmaker Joselito Altarejos.

Jalil Lespert’s biopic Yves Saint Laurent, which stars Pierre Niney as the legendary fashion designer, will open the Panorama Special section on Feb. 7 at the newly renovated Zoo Palast cinema in western Berlin.

Taiwanese cinema will have pride of place in the Panorama next year with three world premieres: Cho Li’s The Rice Bomber, Ice Poison from Midi Z and Journey to the West from director Tsai Ming-liang.

There is also a strong sampling from filmmakers closer to home. Stereo, the sophomore feature from German director Maximilian Erlenwein (Schwerkraft), which stars Jurgen Vogel and Moritz Bleibtreu, will have its world premiere, as will Superegos, the latest from festival favorite Benjamin Heisenberg (The Robber). The Lamb, a German-Turkish co-production from director Kutlug Ataman (Lola + Billidikid) will also make its global bow in Berlin.

The 64th Berlin International Film Festival opens Feb. 6, 2014 with the world premiere of Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel.
