Elderly ex-hostage discharged, relative in Azeri captivity may be released

PanARMENIAN.Net - Negotiations to return Arsen Khojoyan, an Armenian citizen who crossed the line of contact into Azerbaijan are under way, the secretary of Azerbaijan’s State Commission for Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons said.

Shahin Sailov didn’t rule out the possibility that the captive might be returned within a month. Sailov also noted that the captive expressed no wish to be transferred into the third country, Day.az reported.

Released captive Mamikon Khojoyan will be discharged from hospital today (April 3,) Panorama.am reported.

The head of traumatology unit at Yerevan’s St. Gregory the Illuminator Medical Center Karen Manukyan told Panorama.am that Khojoyan’s health condition is satisfactory.

The 77-year-old Khojoyan, a resident of Verin Karmiraghbyur village in Armenia’s Tavush province, was transported from Ijevan Medical Center to Yerevan after being released from Azeri captivity on March 4. He was in critical condition. Traces of violence and a gunshot wound were found on his body. He underwent surgery at St. Gregory the Illuminator Medical Center.

Arsen Khojoyan crossed the Armenian-Azerbaijani border on March 7. According to preliminary information, he lost his way in a thick fog. The 23-year old is a relative of Mamikon Khojoyan, 77 who was released from Azeri captivity in March.

Against Legal Abuse NGO will apply to international organizations to defend the interests of the recently released Armenian captive Mamikon Khojoyan.

As the head of the organization, ex-MP Larisa Alaverdyan told a Thursday, March 6 news conference, Knojoyan's case will be brought to the attention of the European Court of Human rights, with a number of legal experts to be involved. The NGO intends to raise international awareness of the tortures Khojoyan was subjected to while in Azeri captivity, Armenia Today reported.

Baku has claimed all along that the elderly resident of Verin Karmiraghbyur, an Armenian village close to the Azerbaijani border, was armed and acted as a guide for an Armenian “sabotage squad” that tried to carry out a cross-border incursion.

The Armenian military and the village administration have laughed off these claims, saying that Khojoyan suffers mental disorders and strayed into Azerbaijani territory by accident. Some Azerbaijani analysts have also brushed aside the official Azerbaijani version of his detention.
