Argentinean helmer Pablo Trapero to head Cannes’ Un Certain Regard jury

PanARMENIAN.Net - Argentinean scriptwriter, producer and director Pablo Trapero will be president of the jury for the Festival de Cannes' Official Selection in Un Certain Regard, The Hollywood Reporter said.

The selection is made up of some 20 films. Festival organizers will announce the Festival's Competition lineup and Un Certain Regard selections on April 17.

Trapero said he is "very proud to serve" as the Un Certain Regard president.

"Proud to take part in another way in the adventure in Cannes. Un Certain Regard, where I have presented three of my films, is always a very exciting selection," Trapero said. "It brings us grand masters, promising young talent, new countries and new forms of cinema."

Trapero's first feature film Mundo Grua picked up the critics’ award at the Venice Film Festival in 1999. His second, El Bonaerense, was selected in 2002 for the Un Certain Regard sidebar. In 2008, his film Leonera screened in Competition at the Festival de Cannes, showcasing actress Martina Gusman. Carancho (2010) and Elefante blanco (2012) followed and both premiered in Un Certain Regard.

Each of Trapero’s movies portrays a harsh social reality in an almost documentary style, through a plot that is akin to a thriller, offering an uncompromising look at contemporary political issues.

In 2002, Trapero founded Matanza Cine, an independent company that produces young Argentinean filmmakers, including Lisandro Alonso (La Libertad), Enrique Bellande and Raul Perrone.

Trapero follows Thomas Vinterberg, last year’s Un Certain Regard jury president. Franco-Cambodian film The Missing Picture, by Rithy Panh won the section's top prize in 2013.

The winner of the Prize for Un Certain Regard will be announced May 23, on the eve of the 67th festival's closing night awards ceremony, which will take place this year on a Saturday night.
