David Javerbaum’s “Last Testament: Memoir by God” to hit Broadway

PanARMENIAN.Net - Producer Jeffrey Finn has announced a 2015 Broadway premiere for An Act of God, the stage adaptation of the book The Last Testament: A Memoir by God, which is billed as being transcribed by David Javerbaum, The Hollywood Reporter said.

A Tony nominee with co-writer Adam Schlesinger for their score to the 2008 musical Cry-Baby, Javerbaum is best known as the former head writer and executive producer of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, a gig that earned him eleven Primetime Emmy Awards. He won an additional two Emmys for co-writing songs (again with Schlesinger) performed by host Neil Patrick Harris on the Tony Awards two years running.

While little information has been released about An Act of God, a spokesman for the production confirmed that it will be a play, not a musical, with Javerbaum taking the reins solo on the script.

"I am deeply disappointed that Jeffrey Finn has decided to produce this show," said Javerbaum in a statement. "It will force me to continue my unwanted professional association with God, an abstract entity who has given me nothing but discomfort and agita. It is my desperate hope that we close out of town."

First published in 2011 and in an updated edition a year later, Javerbaum's book was described in The New York Times as "fearless ... A recklessly funny series of gags about all things religious and quite a few things secular too." The Washington Post review called it "like The Bible, if The Bible were narrated by Mel Brooks on crack-laced manna."

A preview and opening schedule, along with theater, cast and creative team details, will be announced at a later date.

Finn is currently represented on Broadway as a producer of Will Eno's play The Realistic Joneses, which stars Toni Collette, Michael C. Hall, Tracy Letts and Marisa Tomei.
