U.S. Congressmen meet Armenian PM, Karabakh President in Yerevan

PanARMENIAN.Net - Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan met a delegation of the U.S. Congressmen led by Ed Royce, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives, Aysor.am said citing governmental press service.

At the April 25 meeting, Abrahamyan thanked the Congressmen for their participation in the Armenian Genocide commemoration events, also welcoming adoption of the Genocide resolution the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The Congressmen, in turn, congratulated Hovik Abrahamyan on his appointment as prime minister.

They further stressed the importance of their visit to Yerevan on April 24 to show support to the Armenian people "who – despite the numerous hardships - managed to preserve and develop their culture through their will power and fortitude."

Stressing the importance of ties with the U.S., the PM noted that strengthening and promoting bilateral cooperation with the United States is one of his priorities. He thanked the American side for assistance with Armenia’s democratization, human rights protection and reforms in various spheres.

The parties stressed the importance of further development of bilateral economic links, stressing the need to expand bilateral trade and implement investment projects. Dwelling on further programs, the prime minister said the economic policy will be aimed at promoting equal opportunities in competition.

In this context, the Congressmen pledged to assist with attraction of investments from U.S. companies.

In conclusion, Abrahamyan briefed the Congressmen on political situation in the region and Armenia’s position on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement and establishment of diplomatic relations with Turkey. As the PM stressed in this context, linking Armenian-Turkish normalization with the Karabakh problem is inadmissible.

The Permanent Representation of NKR in Yerevan hosted a meeting between President Bako Sahakyan and the U.S. Congressmen.

Issues related to the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict and regional processes were discussed at the April 25 meeting. Both sides expressed support for peaceful resolution of the conflict within the OSCE Minsk Group framework.

President Sahakyan stressed the importance of developing ties with the U.S., a home to millions of Armenians.

NKR Foreign Minister Karen Mirzoyan, representatives of the Armenian National Committee of America led by ANCA chairman Ken Hachikian and other officials attended the meeting, Panorama.am reported citing the press service of Artsakh Republic President.
