Sony ceases OLED TV development to focus on 4K LCDs: reportMay 14, 2014 - 10:52 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Sony has reportedly ceased the commercial development of OLED television sets to focus its resources on 4K hardware, Digital Spy reported. Japanese publication Nikkei claims that the electronics giant plans to reassign staff from its OLED division to the development of 4K LCD sets. Sony has struggled to compete with market leaders LG and Samsung in the OLED sector, with the high cost of the sets often deterring customers. However, the firm is a market leader when it comes to 4K, claiming 20% of the value of all shipments last year, with plans to launch an additional eight 4K TVs in 2014. Sony was one of the first companies to enter the consumer OLED business with the release of its 11-inch Sony XEL-1 set, which was priced at £1,300. Its 4K sets account for roughly 50% of its flat-panel lineup for the current fiscal year.
