Hong Kong picks “Golden Era” Venice drama as foreign language Oscar entry

PanARMENIAN.Net - Ann Hui’s “Golden Era” which was the closing film at this month’s Venice film festival, has been selected to represent Hong Kong in the foreign-language Oscar race, Variety said.

The Tang Wei-starring film is a biopic of early 20th century writer Xiao Hong, who died young and uncelebrated, but has since been elevated as one of China’s most important recent authors.

The film’s selection was announced by Hong Kong’s Motion Picture Industry Association.

It has not yet been released commercially, but will need to complete a wee of commercial release in Hong Kong before the end of the month in order to be eligible for the foreign-language Academy Award category.
