Joaquin Phoenix in Paul Thomas Anderson’s

PanARMENIAN.Net - The first trailer for "Inherent Vice" has landed online for viewing pleasure. Coming from "The Master" duo Paul Thomas Anderson and Joaquin Phoenix, it follows Doc Sportello who gets wrapped up in a case involving his ex-girlfriend. She shows up out of nowhere, asking for help to investigate the disappearance of her current billionaire boyfriend.

Instead of a cool, sleek detective, Phoenix plays a pothead sleuth who stumbles numerous times, literally, through the investigation. Josh Brolin's straight-laced LAPD detective and his "pancake-os" add to the comical tone teased in the trailer. The other side characters getting sneak peek include ones played by Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, and Benicio Del Toro.

Adapted from the novel of the same name by famous reclusive author Thomas Pynchon, the movie will premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 4 before opening in U.S. limited theaters on December 12. Jena Malone, Maya Rudolph, and Martin Short are among the cast, while singer/songwriter Joanna Newsom narrates the movie with her sultry voice.
