German authorities seize $63mln worth of heroin

PanARMENIAN.Net - German authorities say they've seized 330 kilograms of heroin worth an estimated 50 million euros ($63 million) that smugglers brought to Europe hidden in a shipment of cucumbers and garlic from Iran, the Associated Press reports.

The Federal Criminal Police Office said Thursday, Oct 9, a Syrian-Iraqi organized crime ring that has operated for years is believed to be behind the attempt to import the drugs, seized Sept 22 around the western city of Essen.

Police said the months-long investigation was part of efforts to target international organized crime. They refused to say whether the drugs were believed to have originated in Iran, or were hidden in the shipment en route.

Two brothers in Germany and a Dutchman who lived in Belgium were arrested in September in connection with the case.
