Karabakh tops post-Soviet areas for trust in judicial branch: GallupOctober 24, 2014 - 19:06 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Nagorno Karabakh is ahead of all other post-Soviet areas for the level of trust in its judicial branch, ArmeniaNow said. According to a research published by Gallup American company, 72% of Nagorno Karabakh’s population has confidence in the republic’s judicial branch. In Armenia, only 30% views the work of judges as fair, while almost half of the population - 49% have no confidence in courts. While Gallup’s sociologists do not explain why the trust in courts is so high in Nagorno Karabakh, the president of the National Revival Party in Karabakh, Hayk Khanumyan, links the fact to the high level of trust in all state institutions. “That trust has been earned during many years; increased confidence in social institution is specific to small societies,” Khanumyan told ArmeniaNow. However, according to the Karabakh politician, the high level of trust does not mean that courts are completely independent. In neighboring Azerbaijan, only 41% of the population trusts the judicial branch, with 31% skeptical. Georgia tops the list of CIS for the level of trust, with 51% believing in justice. Georgia is followed by Belarus and Estonia (47% of trust each). In Russia, 54% of citizens do not trust the courts. Top stories Six total incidents have burned 19 old-growth trees.
