German MFA gives elusive answers to inquiry on Karabakh

PanARMENIAN.Net - In October, representatives of the left-wing Die Linke party in Bundestag submitted a 40-question inquiry about possible role of Germany in the resolution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

On Nov 6, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs responded with a short message, which says that the tensions in the Karabakh conflict “have increased since the beginning of the year, reaching peak at the end of July and beginning of August and then subsiding to the previous level.”

18,000 cases of ceasefire violations by the Azerbaijan have been registered at the border with Armenia and contact line with the Karabakh armed forces since the beginning of 2014 against 13,000 in same period of 2013.

In its inquiry, the party stressed the exclusive role of Moscow in the process, as Russia “maintains close relations both with Armenia and Azerbaijan”.

“The meeting between the Armenian, Russian and Azerbaijani Presidents earlier this year was initiated by the Russian side. What can Germany do for the resolution of this conflict, being a member of the OSCE Minsk Group?” the party asked.

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now.
