Strand nabs U.S. rights to Fatih Akin Genocide drama “The Cut”

PanARMENIAN.Net - Strand Releasing has acquired all U.S. rights to Fatih Akin’s “The Cut” four months after its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Variety reported.

It’s the fifth feature collaboration between Strand and Akin.

“The Cut” tells the story of an Armenian man, Nazareth Manoogian, who after surviving the Genocide learns that his twin daughters may be alive, and goes on a quest to find them. Nazareth’s journey takes him from his village Mardin to the deserts, to Cuba and finally North Dakota.

The deal was done between Jon Gerrans of Strand Releasing and Brigitte Suarez of the Match Factory.

The film is the third installment of Akin’s Love, Death and the Devil trilogy, following “Head On” in 2004 and “The Edge of Heaven” in 2007.

The screenplay was co-written with Mardik Martin, whose previous efforts include his screenplays for Martin Scorsese’s “Mean Streets” and “Raging Bull.”

The film was produced by Bombero International in co-production with Pyramide Prods, Pandora Film, Corazon International, NDR, ARD Degeto, France 3 Cinema, Dorje Film, BIM Distribuzione, Opus Film, Jordan Films and Anadolu Kultur.

The film has already sold to Benelux (Cineart), Bulgaria (Art Fest), Colombia, Central America (Babilla Cine), CIS (Mars Media), Ex-Yugoslavia (MCF), Greece (Rosebud.21), Italy (BIM), Japan (Bitters End), Romania (Independenta Film 97), Spain (Golem), Switzerland (Pathe), Taiwan (Cineplex) and U.K. (Soda).

Strand plans for a spring release in the U.S.
