Sam Smith becomes only artist to sell 1M albums in UK, U.S.

PanARMENIAN.Net - Sam Smith has become the only artist to sell a million albums in both the UK and U.S. in 2014, Digital Spy reports.

The singer's debut collection In The Lonely Hour passed the sale milestone in both territories within 24 hours of each other.

By midnight December 17 night, Smith had sold 1.007 million copies of the album, according to Official Charts Company data.

"Officially sold 1 million copies of In The Lonely Hour! To say I am ecstatic is a huge understatement," Smith said.

"Thank you so much to every single person who has purchased my album."

Ed Sheeran's x is the only other album to pass the million sales mark in the UK in 2014, while Taylor Swift's 1989 is the only other artist album to do the same in the U.S..

In The Lonely Hour has topped the UK chart and peaked at number two in the U.S. since its release earlier in the summer.

Smith recently told Digital Spy that he has spent a lot of time "dissecting what it is that's made this album connect" following its success.
