Robert Rodriguez to direct life-action “Fire And Ice” for Sony

PanARMENIAN.Net - Sony Pictures has set up a live-action version of Ralph Bakshi’s animated “Fire And Ice” with Robert Rodriguez directing, Variety said.

The original 1983 film, based on characters created by Bakshi and Frank Frazetta, used rotoscoping with scenes shot in live action and traced on to animation cells. Fox released the film, which grossed less than $1 million.

The story originated in a village destroyed by a surging glacier, the domain for an Ice Lord. The only survivor vows to avenge this act of destruction.

Bold Films’ Gary Michael Walters, Matthew Rhodes and Michel Litvak have funded development of drafts with Rodriguez.

The filmmaker’s “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” generated moderate returns this fall with worldwide grosses of $38 million.

The deal for “Fire and Ice” was made with Sony Pictures Entertainment still reeling from the fall out over the massive hacking of its computers, leading to the studio pulling the release of “The Interview” in the wake of a terrorist threat by the hackers to attack theaters if they showed the comedy.

Sony has continued to set up projects in recent weeks, such as an untitled science-fiction movie with J.J. Abrams producing.

The “Fire and Ice” news was first reported by Deadline.com.
