David Fincher working on new HBO project about 1980s music industry

PanARMENIAN.Net - David Fincher could be taking a trip down memory lane with his new TV project. The critically-acclaimed filmmaker, who directed music videos early in his career, is shepherding a comedy about music-video industry in the 1980s for HBO.

Tentatively titled "Living on Video", the half-hour project is set in 1983 Los Angeles and "centers on Bobby, a wide-eyed guy who drops out of college and drives to Hollywood with dreams of directing a sci-fi epic," AceShowbiz reports citing Deadline. "He lands a job as a PA for a company making music videos."

"The series revolves around the players of the then-exploding music video industry - directors, record executives and crew members, many of them dabbling in drugs - through the eyes of the newcomer." It's written by Rich Wilkes ("XXX") and Bob Stevenson based on an idea by Fincher. The "Zodiac" helmer is expected to direct the comedy pilot, though HBO has not officially greenlit the pilot.

He recently told Playboy about working on a TV show based on his experiences as a music video director, "Studios treat audiences like lemmings, like cattle in a stockyard. I don't want to ask actors or anyone else on a movie to work so hard with me if the studios treat us as though we're making Big Macs... This TV show I'm doing about music videos in the 1980s and the crew members who worked on them, or this other show, a Sunset Boulevard set in the world of soaps - they're not Big Macs. I don't make Big Macs."

Fincher earned an Emmy Award for directing the first episode of "House of Cards". He is also working on a U.S. adaptation of British conspiracy thriller "Utopia" and 1950s Los Angeles noir drama "Shakedown", which are both developed at HBO. One of his most memorable music videos is Madonna's "Express Yourself".
