Radiohead’s Thom Yorke named most legally downloaded artist

PanARMENIAN.Net - Thom Yorke has been named the most legally downloaded artist on BitTorrent in 2014. The Radiohead frontman released his second solo album Tomorrow's Modern Boxes in September of this year, with a free teaser from the record seeing over 116,000 downloads in the first 24 hours, Gigwise reports.

Yorke intended on breaking standard industry convention by releasing the record as a special bundle through the site, which is usually the home to illegal downloads, but offered a $6 paygate for the full record.

Speaking about the format in a press release, Yorke stated: "As an experiment we are using a new version of BitTorrent to distribute a new Thom Yorke record. The new Torrent files have a pay gate to access a bundle of files."

"The files can be anything, but in this case is an 'album'. It’s an experiment to see if the mechanics of the system are something that the general public can get its head around."

This wasn't the first time Yorke had experimented with uncommon release methods, with Radiohead famously offering a 'pay what you want' system for their 2007 album In Rainbows.

Diplo, De La Soul and Hundred Waters also featured on the list of most downloaded artists.
