Google overwhelmed with piracy takedown requests

PanARMENIAN.Net - Google received over 345 million requests to take down links deemed to be in breach of copyright laws in 2014.

The search giant saw a 75% increase in requests on 2013, after acquiring just 62 in 2008 and then 441,370 in 2012.

As Digital Spy reports citing Torrent Freak, UK music industry trade body BPI appealed the most to Google, asking for over 60 million infringing links to be deleted.

The sites Google received the most takedown requests for were uploaded.net, 4shared.com and rapidgator.net. Each of these domains had over 5 million 'pirate' URLs.

Google said in a statement that piracy is so high because of a lack of legal options available to users.

"Piracy often arises when consumer demand goes unmet by legitimate supply. As services ranging from Netflix to Spotify to iTunes have demonstrated, the best way to combat piracy is with better and more convenient legitimate services," stated the company.

"The right combination of price, convenience, and inventory will do far more to reduce piracy than enforcement can."

Rights holders previously accused Google and Bing of pointing music fans to pirated versions of songs rather than legal downloads.

Meanwhile, Game of Thrones was recently revealed as the most illegally-downloaded TV show of 2014, for the third year in a row. Its season four finale set a new piracy record, with 1.5 million downloads recorded within 12 hours of the episode being broadcast.
