Montebello to host Volunteer Armenia Exposition

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Armenian Cultural Foundation will be hosting an all-day Volunteer Armenia Exposition at the Armenian Center in Montebello, Calif., U.S., on Saturday, Feb. 28, to promote more volunteer, NGO and study abroad opportunities in Armenia, Artsakh and Javakhk, and to strengthen ties between the homeland and the diaspora, Asbarez reports.

Some of the organizations participating include TUMO, United Nations Armenia, Armenian Land and Culture, American University of Armenia, Armenia Tree Project, Armenia Volunteer Corps, Armenian General Benevolent Union, AYF Youth Corps, Birthright Armenia, Armenian Relief Society, Paros Foundation, Entanik, Habitat for Humanity, Orran, Nor Luyce Mentoring Center, and Zartonk-89.

“We believe that when an individual works and lives among the people for an extended period, they become better activists upon return to their local communities,” said Stepan Altounian, an organizer of the event. “In addition, some may even decide to repatriate,” he added.

The Southern California Armenian community has seen a growing number of young Armenians repatriating to Armenia and organizers hope to amplify the trend.

The event will be setup in a trade show format allowing organizations to present their program to interested attendees. Special guest speakers will be announced soon, who will address an audience about volunteer opportunities.

From study-abroad opportunities to public health service to construction work, Volunteer Armenia aims to offer an interested individual everything they could possibly need to begin — or continue — a lifetime of service to the Armenian homeland.

The event is co-sponsored by the Armenian Youth Federation-Western Region, an Armenian American youth organization working to advance the social, political, educational and cultural awareness of Armenian youth, and the All-Armenian Student Association, a collective organization of the various Armenian student groups, and the Occidental College Armenian Students Association.
