Volvo to unveil fleet of 100 autonomous cars by 2017February 23, 2015 - 14:33 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Volvo has announced plans to let loose a fleet of 100 autonomous cars by 2017, according to Digital Spy. The 'Drive Me' vehicles will be tested by members of the public in the automaker's home city of Gothenberg, Sweden. "To start with we foresee autonomous drive will be available in controlled areas, for example on roads with no unprotected road users and no oncoming traffic," said Volvo director Karl-Johan Runnberg. "Motorways are a good type of roads to start with the implementation of autonomous drive." The cars rely on an array of sensors, including radar, sonar, laser scanners and optical cameras, to navigate highways and process road signs and traffic data. Users are presented with a high-resolution 3D map with GPS positioning inside the vehicle, and have the option to assume manual control at any time. Volvo has plans to test the vehicles in other locations following the Swedish trials, ahead of an anticipated commercial release date of 2020.
