“Fifty Shades of Grey” earns $500 million at worldwide box office

PanARMENIAN.Net - “Fifty Shades of Grey” has crossed a milestone, earning $500 million at the worldwide box office, TheWrap reports.

The Jamie Dornan-Dakota Johnson R-rated romance has collected $150 million in the US and raked in $352 million internationally.

The steamy blockbuster features Dornan and Johnson as BDSM enthusiasts Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, respectively, and has broken a number of records since its impressive Valentine’s Day weekend debut, when it opened at No. 1 in 54 territories.

A $55 million international gross on Saturday alone made it the highest-grossing Valentine’s Day release ever, as well as the studio’s highest-grossing day ever.

Domestically, “Fifty Shades” became the highest-grossing February weekend opening, the biggest Valentine’s Day and Valentine’s Day weekend opening, and the top President’s Day weekend opening of all time.

Overall, Sam Taylor-Johnson‘s drama made box office history with the largest opening weekend for a female director ever, an $85.2 three-day haul. It’s Universal’s top R-rated opening, and the studio’s third highest-grossing opening ever behind Universal’s “Fast Five” and “Fast & Furious 6.”
