"Cinderella," "Kingsman" top $300 million at global box office

PanARMENIAN.Net - “Cinderella” danced its way past $300 million at the global box office after opening in a number of key foreign markets, Variety reports.

The Disney live-action remake of the animated classic topped overseas charts, earning $38.7 million after debuting in Spain, the United Kingdom, Brazil, France and Australia. The rags-to-riches story of a woman who captures a prince’s heart while losing her shoe is also the studio’s second highest-grossing live-action release in China, having made $65.1 million in the People’s Republic. Globally, its total stands at a regal $336.2 million.

“The Divergent Series: Insurgent” continued to improve upon its predecessor’s overseas haul, picking up $29.9 million in its second week of release. The strength of the dollar is making comparisons with “Divergent” difficult to calculate, but Lionsgate, the studio behind “Insurgent,” reports that the second chapter in the series is trumping the prior film in a number of key markets. In France, “Insurgent” is outpacing “Divergent” by 40%, and it’s up 25% in the United Kingdom, 76% in Brazil and 29% in Mexico.

“Insurgent” has made $180.1 million worldwide and is on track to eclipse the $288.7 million that “Divergent” pulled in globally, even though domestic results have been weaker than expected.

“Kingsman: The Secret Service” has passed the $300 million mark globally after earning $25 million at the foreign box office. The tongue-in-cheek spy adventure got a lift from debuting to more than $20 million in China.

The weekend’s top domestic release, “Home,” had to settle for fourth place on foreign charts. The animated film made $24 million in 64 territories to bring its global total to $102.2 million.

“Focus” rounded out the top five, picking up $8.2 million from 62 territories. Will Smith’s heist romance has earned $134.3 million worldwide since opening in February.
