The film stars Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall as a young married couple whose life is going as planned until a chance encounter with an acquaintance from the husband’s high school. After a seemingly coincidental series of encounters prove troubling, a horrifying secret from the couple’s past is uncovered. With her husband’s honesty in question, the wife begins to ask how well do we really know the people closest to us, and are past bygones ever really bygones? Edgerton wrote and directed the film in addition to starring in it. Jason Blum, whose producing credits include “Whiplash” and “The Purge,” produced the film through his Blumhouse Productions banner. STX Entertainment will distribute the film theatrically. The company recently announced a historic financing deal with Chinese company the Huayi Brothers. “The Gift” will debut in theaters on July 31.
