Jazz guitarist Alex Baboian, his band release debut album “Curiosity”April 9, 2015 - 09:39 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - A native of Belmont, Mass., jazz guitarist Alex Baboian and his band have released their debut album entitled “Curiosity', the Armenian Weekly reports. The independently released album features Baboian’s original compositions and arrangements for trio and quintet. While the music is rooted in the jazz tradition, it draws on many other modern influences such as 20th-century classical, blues, folk, and free improvisation, resulting in a very original and personal sound. The album was described by Allaboutjazz.com as “an intimate, contemplative, and supremely lyrical work,” “sonic poetry.” Alex Baboian, who is the son of jazz guitarist and Berklee professor John Baboian, has been described by music educator Hal Crook as a “future major voice in jazz.” He graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2012 with a degree in music performance and augmented that degree in 2014 with another major in electronic production and design. He has been living in Yerevan for the past several months, where he has performed with local jazz musicians in clubs and concerts, and is studying the Armenian language and Armenian folk music. He recently performed with the Armenian State Jazz Orchestra, and played a series of “gigs” at the jazz club in Gyumri.
