Karabakh airspace effectively protected by armed forces: President

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh) Republic President Bako Sahakyan was present at the republican military maneuvers with the involvement of air defense units held in one of the training grounds in the south of the country on April 29.

According to presidential website, Bako Sahakyan stressed the significance of air defense in the army building process, underlining that the republic's air space was effectively protected by the Artsakh armed forces.

Recently, Azerbaijan upped instances of ceasefire violation, with over 1200 reported from April 19-25 at the line of contact with the Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh) armed forces.

Azerbaijan fired over 20000 shots from 60-mm mortars and grenade launchers towards the Artsakh positions.

According to the Artsakh Defense Ministry press service, Karabakh frontline units continue controlling the situation.

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now.
