Genocide commemorations not over with April 24: official

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Armenian Genocide centennial commemoration is not over with April 24 events: political, sports, cultural events will be organized throughout the whole year, secretary of the state commission on the coordination of events dedicated to the Armenian Genocide centennial, Chief of Staff of the Armenian President’s office Vigen Sargsyan said, according to Tert.am.

“We are confident that those events served the purpose we had set, including the issue of raising awareness of the Armenian Genocide on the international level, developing and mobilizing certain public opinion concerning the issue of fighting and condemning genocides as crimes against humanity,” Sargsyan told a press conference on May 4.

The official further addressed the comments made at the anti-genocide forum in Yerevan, highlighting particularly a former International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor’s call for making Armenia a leader in the world campaign against crimes of genocide.

Sargsyan also emphasized the problem of national and religious unity which was best demonstrated during the days of commemoration. “The canonization of the Armenian Genocide victims at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin was the culmination of all this, which was an important manifestation of unity with bells ringing not only in Armenian churches, but in Sister churches as well,” he said.

According to him, the concert by System of a Down was an unprecedented event that drew the youth’s attention to the issue of struggling against genocide. “Despite the adverse weather conditions, unity and solidarity, unprecedented participation by young people came to once again prove that the idea of the concert was a right one to accomplish. I’d like to once again thank the band members for their devoted and consistent approach,” Sargsyan noted.

He also said that the world’s attention was focused on Yerevan on April 24 and that “the events commemorating the Genocide were broadcast live by a number of international TV channels.”

“I’d also like to express admiration and gratitude to the society and every single individual, NGOs, media outlets, political parties for their participation and their approach,” he said.

Sargsyan revealed that in the framework of upcoming events, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan will participate in the liturgy to be saved at the Washington National Cathedral by the two Catholicoses, while events will further be organized throughout the United States and other cities around the globe.
