Google to launch a 3D-scanning Project Tango smartphoneMay 30, 2015 - 19:46 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Google began selling its spatially-aware Project Tango tablets in the U.S. this week, but its ambitions for the technology do not stop there, Digital Spy reports. The web giant has teamed up with chip maker Qualcomm to bring the slate's 3D scanning features to a smartphone later this year. Project Tango devices are capable of carrying out 250,000 3D measurements per second, and able to create detailed 3D maps based on the user's surroundings. Potential applications of the Android devices include mapping out interiors and helping visually-impaired users find their way around unfamiliar buildings. Qualcomm confirmed that it is working with Google to bring these features to a handset powered by its high-end Snapdragon 810 chip and the Adreno 430 GPU. "We're excited to work together with Google and Android developers to help deliver new, innovative visual experiences using depth-sensing technology on mobile devices," said Qualcomm's Raj Talluri at the I/O developer conference. The Project Tango smartphone is expected to be aimed squarely at developers, at least to begin with.
